4Kids Entertainment Acquires Yu-Gi-Oh!

The company that brought America Pokémon is set to bring you the anime that "dethroned" Pokémon in Japan..

The series known as Yu-Gi-Oh! began as a manga series in 1996, in Shonen Jump. It quickly ballooned into a TV series and a cardgame that became more popular than the Pocket Monsters CCG.

Today, 4Kids has announced their acquisition of this series. Excerpted from the Press Release:
4KIDS ENTERTAINMENT ACQUIRES RIGHTS TO YU-GI-OH!

NEW YORK, NY, April 19, 2001 - 4Kids Entertainment, Inc. (NYSE: KDE), a fully integrated global licensing and children's entertainment company, today announced that it has acquired the merchandising and television rights to the Japanese property YU-GI-OH! for the world outside of Asia.

YU-GI-OH!, which incorporates an animated television series, video game, comic book series and card game has become very popular in Japan.

"We are excited to have acquired the licensing and broadcast rights to YU-GI-OH!" stated Mr. Al Kahn, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of 4Kids. "This is a continuation of our strategy of bringing popular Japanese properties to the rest of the world."
