FUNimation renames Conan

FUNimation sent out an advisory today stating that due to unspecified legal considerations, Detective Conan is to be renamed "Case Closed".

Conan Edogawa is coming to the United States. He is the star of the mega-popular series known in Japan as Detective Conan. This series is so popular that after eight years of running and over 350 episodes, new episodes for the show are still being produced and broadcast. The series remains one of the top rated shows for every age demographic in Japan as well as other countries. We expect this series to enjoy the same success in the U.S. market.

Due to legal considerations, this highly anticipated series will be released in the United States as Case Closed. Working closely with our Japanese partners, Case Closed was chosen as the name best suited for the U.S. market.

Case Closed is scheduled to broadcast on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim beginning April 5, 2004. Fans everywhere will be able to tune in and watch Conan Edogawa in his North American debut. The www.caseclosed.com Website is under construction, but fans can stop by and view the Case Closed FAQ, submit questions and sign up for Case Closed email updates.

In addition the renaming the series, FUNimation will also be renaming most of the characters for a mass-market release. Similarly to the series name-change, FUNimation informs us that they "worked closely" with their Japanese partners to pick names that would be suitable for the show and more acceptable to western TV audienced. However, they confirmed for us that the DVD will have a subtitled track that would feature the characters' original Japanese names.
