Masahiro Ando, Bones' samurai anime competed with 20th Century Boys

Masahiro Andō and Bones' Stranger - Mukoh Hadan (Sword of the Stranger) samurai anime film received the Menzione Speciale recognition at Italy's Future Film Festival this past week. Stranger was competing along with Yukihiko Tsutsumi's first live-action 20th Century Boys suspense film and Paco and the Magical Book, Tetsuya Nakashima's surreal live-action fantasy film. The 11-year-old festival in the city of Bologna puts its spotlight on animated and live-action special effects films from around the world.

The festival's Lancia Platinum Grand Prize went to Argentina's Martin Fierro – The Movie. Last year, Michael Arias and Studio 4°C's Tekkonkinkreet received the Menzione Speciale recognition, while Makoto Shinkai's 5 Centimeters Per Second film won the animation grand prize.

Bandai Entertainment will run Sword of the Stranger in over 360 American theaters on February 5. The film centers on a nameless samurai ("Nanashi") and the boy he vows to protect from pursuing feudal factions.
