Yellow Tanabe drew short story several months before launching series in 2003

The Club Sunday website of Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine has posted the one-shot manga that served as the "long-lost prototype" for Yellow Tanabe's hit supernatural adventure manga, Kekkaishi. The 44-page one-shot story will be available for free until July 14. Shonen Sunday published the prototype in 2003, several months before the full series version of Kekkaishi debuted. However, the prototype has not been reproduced in book form yet. A Kekkaishi official guidebook did publish a one-shot story that first ran in a spinoff magazine called Shōnen Sunday Chō-zōkan, but that was a different, later version of the story.

Viz Media will publish the 17th volume of the manga in North America this month. A television series adaptation aired in Japan from 2006 to 2008. Tanabe is still drawing Kekkaishi, and she just drew a manga called "Birthday" in the inaugural issue of Monthly Shonen Sunday magazine last week.
