Event to celebrate 35 years of publication of Osamu Akimoto's police manga

The 30th issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, released on Monday, announced that Osamu Akimoto's police comedy manga Kochira Katsushika-ku Kamearikouen-mae Hashutsujo ("Kochikame") will appear in 13 Shueisha manga magazines between August and October. Each magazine will publish a one-shot of the manga.

The special publication event is being held to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the manga being published in Weekly Shonen Jump. Shueisha released the 175th compiled book volume on Monday. As of June, the series has sold more than 143 million copies.

The following manga magazine issues will publish Akimoto's one shots:

A live-action drama adaptation of the manga, starring SMAP band member Shingo Katori as the hapless police officer Ryōtsu Kankichi, aired in 2009, and a live-action film will hit theaters on August 6.

The manga also inspired a 1977 live-action film with director Kazuhiko Yamaguchi and actor Mitsuo Senda in the lead role. There was also a 1985 television anime special, a 1996-2004 television anime series, and two anime films.
