Singapore animation about the life and work of "gekiga" artist Yoshihiro Tatsumi.

The animated film Tatsumi opens at three U.K. cinemas (two in London, one in Edinburgh) on Friday January 13. (It will also be possible to order it as an online stream, see below.) Made in Singapore, Tatsumi is about the pioneering manga artist Yoshihiro Tatsumi, who wrote adult ("gekiga") stories in strip form. Directed by Eric Khoo, the film adapts five of Tatsumi's manga stories, threaded together with Tatsumi's account of his struggle to make a living after World War II. (The autobiographical material comes from Tatsumi's manga, A Drifting Life.) The U.K. distributor, Soda Pictures, uploaded an 82-second trailer to YouTube, embedded above.

The film has been rated '15' by the BBFC for "strong sex." (The BBFC page on the film has more information, but also major plot spoilers.)

Institute of Contemporary Arts (map), on The Mall, London, screening between January 13 and February 2 (but not on Mondays and Tuesdays.)

Curzon Soho (map) on Shaftesbury Avenue, London. From Friday January 13, it will also be possible to order Tatsumi as an online stream from the Curzon on Demand site.

Filmhouse Cinema (map), in Lothian Road, Edinburgh.
