YouTube Wins French Copyright Case Against Broadcaster

Désolé, cet article n'est pas disponible en français.

A court of Paris ruled this week that Google's video service YouTube is not liable for streaming videos that originated from TF1, France's most-watched television channel. TF1 had sued YouTube in 2008 for hosting its content and asked for 141 million Euros (about US$175 million) in damages. Instead, thanks to the court ruling, TF1 will have to pay 80,000 Euros (US$100,000) for Google's legal costs.

In dismissing TF1's case, the court said that TF1 did not demonstrate a loss in sales due to the streams. The court added that YouTube qualified as a content hosting platform, which grants the service protection from infringement cases as long as it acts on takedown requests from copyright owners.

TF1 said it will appeal the ruling.
