Video previews new accessible areas

Square Enix announced on Saturday that Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward, the first expansion for its Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn massive multi-player online role-playing game (MMORPG), will be available on June 23. The company also began streaming a field walkthrough video.

The areas introduced in the video are: Lower Ishgard, Upper Ishgard, Coerthas west highlands, Dravania highlands, Dravania lowlands, Dravania cloud field, and Abalathia cloud field.

Game director Naoki Yoshida stated that players will not need to finish the main campaign to enter the new areas, but completion of the upcoming 2.55 patch will be required to enjoy the Heavensward story arc. He also estimated that there will be about 1.5 times as much area to explore in each new zone.

Heavensward will move into the Ishgard area and the country's Dragonsong War with Dravania will be a key plot point. The Wyrmking's fight against Thordan and his Knights Twelve will also be a major focus in the expansion. Square Enix will add The Holy See of Ishgard and multiple "new areas," new "challenging" dungeons, new "high-end" raids, new gear, recipes, airships, primals jobs, and a new race.

Specific new additions include the Dark Knight job class and flying mounts such as black Chocobos. Six flying mount varieties are in the works with a seventh planned depending on fan feedback. Airships are also planned with single-rider versions and multi-rider versions.

The new beast tribes are called the "Vanu Vanu" and "Gnath." The Vanu Vanu's primal is the "Bismarck" and the Gnath's is a laser sword wielding bug called "Ravana."

Inaccessible areas like Dravania will be opened and the player's level cap will be increased to 60.
