Animatsu Acquires In This Corner of the World

A press release by JT Media Works announces that Animatsu has acquired global distribution rights to the cinema film In This Corner of the World (aka To All The Corners Of The World.) The animated wartime drama is written and directed by Sunao Katabuchi (Mai Mai Miracle, Black Lagoon) and animated by the studio MAPPA (Kids on the Slope, Terror in Resonance). In the film's story, a bride named Suzu Urano moves to her new life in Kure City on the coast of Hiroshima Prefecture. The story follows her as she perseveres through World War II.
The film will be released in Japan this October. It is adapted from a manga by Fumiyo Kōno, Kono Sekai no Katasumi.
Katabuchi announced the feature film in 2012. He is quoted in the new press release: "War is the opposite of daily life, yet daily life must go on even through war. And perfectly normal people can achieve this miraculous feat in the most extreme circumstances one can imagine. That's what this film explores. I believe those very specific details in this film help viewers perceive the infinite emotions experienced by these absolutely normal people.”
The film raised 36,224,000 yen (about US$292,000) from 3,374 people via a crowdfunding campaign.
JManga had released Kono's manga in English online. The manga series won an Excellence Prize in the 13th Japan Media Arts Festival, and it already inspired a live-action television special starring Keiko Kitagawa (live-action Sailor Moon's Sailor Mars, Paradise Kiss) as Suzu Urano in 2011.
