Lu over the wall, In This Corner of the World Anime Films Win Awards at Annecy (Updated)

Lu over the wall takes top award, Sawako Kabuki wins graduation film award

The Annecy International Film Festival announced the winners of this year's awards on Saturday. Masaaki Yuasa and Science SARU's Lu over the wall anime film earned the top "Cristal for a Feature Film" award. The Eiga.com entertainment news website reported on Sunday that the last time a Japanese film won the award was 22 years ago, when Isao Takahata's Pom Poko film won the award in 1995.

Sunao Katabuchi and MAPPA's In This Corner of the World anime film earned a Jury Award in the Feature Film category. Additionally, Sawako Kabuki's "Natsu no gero wa huyu no sakana" ("Summer's Puke is Winter's Delight" short film won the Jury Award in the Graduation Films category.

The Audience Award for the Feature Film category went to Dorota Kobiela, Hugh Welchman, Pologne, and Royaume-Uni's Loving Vincent film.

Naoko Yamada and Kyoto Animation's A Silent Voice anime film also screened in competition at this year's festival. The festival also screened Ancien and the Magic Tablet, Rudolf the Black Cat, Blame!, and the French/Japanese animated film Mutafukaz out of competition.

The event also showed footage of the new Mazinger Z film, and hosted a presentation for the upcoming Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters (Godzilla: Kaijū Wakusei) film trilogy.

The Association of Japanese Animations (AJA) hosted a special program titled ANIME NEXT 100 during the festival. The program celebratde 100 years of Japanese animation since 1917.

Established in 1960, Annecy is the world's oldest and largest animation film festival. This year, it ran from June 12-17 at the French community of the same name.
